Exceptional Employees - Meet our 'Employee of the Year'!

Our ‘Employee of the Year’ award aims to recognise employees that deliver outstanding levels of performance, exceed customer expectations, actively encourage new ideas, improve internal practices whilst acting as an ambassador within the team. Meet our ‘Employee of the Year’, David McCormack, who has consistently demonstrated these levels of performance throughout the year!

My Career.

I’ve been working at epyx for about a year and a half. My role as a Data Analyst involves interpreting data and communicating the derived information to management, customers, or other stakeholders, in a way that they can make informed business decisions. The main tools I use to carry this out are Excel, VBA and SQL. Recently, we’ve introduced some mapping software (ArcGIS) with the intent to start exploring geo-spatial trends. One of the most rewarding things about my job is the consistent opportunity to creatively solve problems in ways that benefit the people around me.

When I found out that I had won the ‘Employee of the Year’, I was shocked; my friends and family were so proud and pleased for me! I’m very grateful for being nominated in the first place!

Why I won!

“David’s hard work, perseverance and analytical approach has helped Epyx solve a number of key challenges within marketing, analytics, reporting and new product initiatives.  He has become the go-to person for any analytical needs within the business. He has found innovative ways to solve issues and has supported teams across the company” - Human Resources, FLEETCOR.

One of the main challenges for epyx the past year has been creating opportunities to provide insights to our customers, using the vast set of data that epyx has generated over the years. The ways in which I have tried to overcome some of these issues is by creating a number of internal reports that have helped various teams. The Network Performance and Opportunities Report (NPOR) that I helped to produce is a prime example of this. It provides garages with insights into their own performance and the opportunities available in their area. This monthly report accesses information in our databases and produces a series of graphs and charts in Excel, which are then converted into PDF format and emailed to our customers.

I believe I’ve become the ‘go-to person’ for any analytical needs within the business because I enjoy new challenges and figuring things out. When given an assignment, I approach it like an inquisitive child with a new toy. I want to play with it, figure it out and see what can be done with it; it’s fun for me!

Over the years, I have adopted the mindset that there are no new problems; I aim to solve any problem that is placed in front  of me. Someone else has already encountered these challenges, or at least similar ones before; all I need to do is find that person. Google is an amazing resource and I have a black belt in Google-Fu! Each problem is different and has its own challenges when it comes to the details, but the principles are consistent. If I had to walk you through the process of how I solve a problem, it would look like this:

1. Know you’re capable of solving this problem.
2. Understand the problem and begin with the end in mind.
3. Identify someone who has solved the problem or come close to it (essentially, the art of Google-Fu).
4. Combine new information with your own experiences and blend the two together to come up with a solution.
5. Don’t stop until you’ve figured it out.

I think it’s vital that companies acknowledge the work that employees do on a daily basis and let them know that they are appreciative of what they do. Thankfully, I am surrounded by leaders who have this attitude at epyx. Gratitude is an essential part of a winning mind-set and I think it’s excellent that FLEETCOR recognise quality work.

As part of winning ‘Employee of the Year’, FLEETCOR have rewarded me with a 5 day ‘Luxury Fitness Retreat’ based at the gorgeous Silverfield villa in Spain. The retreat includes three meals a day cooked by personal chefs, fitness and weight training sessions, massages, yoga, kayaking, hiking and much more. The villa that I’ll be staying in looks incredible; it has an infinity pool, an indoor pool, cinema, pool table, a bar, sauna, Jacuzzi – basically everything you could think of!
