Gung-Ho - The 5K inflatable obstacle course
Last weekend, our Knaresborough team took part in the Gung-Ho 5K Obstacle Course in Leeds! Read on to find out how well they did and why they decided to take part!
What is Gung-Ho?
Gung-Ho is an inflatable 5K obstacle course. Since 2015, over 100,000 people have taken part in the challenge and it’s the first of its kind in the UK.
Jamie Macdougall, Inside Sales Manager Partner Team
We decided to organise the obstacle course through our social committee up in Knaresborough as we’re currently trying to start the initiative #FITCOR2018. We believe that a healthy workforce is a happy workforce; as many of us work in the office all day, we thought it would be a great way to motivate ourselves, get active and most importantly have fun. Gung-Ho was our first major event of the year but we are definitely planning more. Overall, it was a fantastic day and we couldn’t have asked for better weather!
On the day, 25 people turned up and were raring to go! After a sweaty but enjoyable 25 to 60 minutes, all of the team had completed the 5K course, which is definitely something to be proud of considering the 10 tricky inflatable obstacles and the heat! Then, we all headed to the pub to soak up some rays, relax and share our stories from the race.
Shaun O’Grady, Inside Sales Executive.
I actually didn’t train for the course at all! In hindsight, I wish I had but only because I’m extremely competitive! I completed the race with a time of 35 – 40 minutes which I was fairly happy with; I didn’t even know that I was capable of running 5K! Despite dreading it during the days leading up to it, I did really enjoy myself and I would definitely do it again.
Amelia Gerrity, Inside Sales Executive.
In the week leading up to the race, I went on two 3K runs that week using the NHS ‘Couch to 5K plan’ which involves a mixture of running and walking. The obstacle course took me an hour to complete and I’m quite pleased with that. However, I would have preferred it if the inflatables were more spread out across the course as putting them together in clusters made them very tough to complete! Despite this, I really did enjoy myself. I had a good laugh; I ended up face planting twice in a row and my hair got stuck in one of obstacles!
Alastair Fielding, Inside Sales Executive.
In preparation for Gung-Ho, I would run 2K on the treadmill whenever I went to the gym. The training was worth it as I completed the course in 40 minutes. However, once I finished the race, I did throw up! Gung-Ho was a great challenge but very fun; it’s not often you can say that you ran 5K whilst jumping over a few inflatables!
Ben Oxtoby, Inside Sales Executive.
I didn’t do any training before the event apart from weight training, which didn’t help at all! Running is usually something that I’d try to avoid, so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Gung-Ho. I didn’t record my time, but it’s unlikely to be record breaking! For me, it’s an achievement that I completed the course and didn’t come last place. My girlfriend and I are already looking at getting tickets for next year’s event!
