I joined FLEETCOR just over five years ago in the telesales team.  I have had an incredible five years rising up through sales to my current role of National Sales Training Manager.

I feel very fortunate to have been entrusted with taking the Sales Training Team from a concept 2 years ago through to a fully functional team that is very much embedded in the Uki Sales business for FLEETCOR, and for me that’s what I find so appealing about FLEETCOR. 

I have been given the opportunity and autonomy to  use my skills, knowledge, ideas and adopt a test and learn approach, which has resulted in driving significant measurable change across a broad range of sales people with varying skillsets.  I have led and delivered a major sales training programme that is now a unique brand within the business, and it feels great to look back on highlights such as this and say I did that!  Finally, my team and I are always looking at different ways to disrupt traditional training methods and make it an exciting experience for everyone involved.

Whilst my role covers the UK sales business we are part of a fantastic global business and my role has seen me working with colleagues from across the globe which is a great experience.  FLEETCOR is a business that doesn’t stand still and for me it is always offering a new challenge to work through.

I have been fortunate to have progressed my career within the business since I joined in 2001, moving from a customer service agent to a telesales role, a field based account manager, to a regional manager and now I am Head of Account Management.

I was able to approach new roles with the support of my managers and colleagues and have always been encouraged by the business to take my next step.


It is really important to me to now support and develop my team with their career ambitions, in the same way my managers have and continue to support me. Since the beginning of the year we have supported progression across the department and I am proud to see 2 members of my team excelling in their new promoted roles and growing their skill sets.


This year we have rolled out an excellent bespoke training programme across the account management team, to refine skills and become more effective. Day in a life of a Sales Executive

To become a successful sales executive you need to be able to manage your day and the expectations of potential & existing customers to make the most of every opportunity presented to you.

Setting yourself a daily plan is essential, this allows you to make sure that your work load is kept up to date and each of your customers’ expectations are being met.

The sales part of the job is of course the beginning of the journey with us at FLEETCOR but the customer management side of things is also essential as this is how you become as successful as you can be.

You have to capitalise on every prospect to close a sale but you must also make sure that when the account is within your 12 week management window, you are making every week count to make sure your customers are using the products to their full potential.

To be a successful sales team member your day would consist of a various number of things:

• Account management & call backs from the day before
• Managing all of your opportunities in your pipeline ensuring that you are speaking with customers in a timely manner
• Cold calling qualified & unqualified leads to make new sales leads
• Opportunity management, closing sales
• Completing administration work, for example putting applications onto the system

Ellis Pennie, Internal Account Manager, Allstar, Swindon

Internal Account Manager – Allstar - Swindon

My journey started in September 2009 as temporary Customer Service Advisor within the Contact Centre. I was fortunate enough to be made a permanent employee on April 1st 2010 and I have never looked back. Following the acquisition in 2011 I continued my journey in the fuel world as an Allstar employee.

In August 2013 I secured a role as a Business Development Executive supporting corporate customers and working closely with Corporate Business Managers. In September 2014 I applied to become an Internal Account Manager and was successful in securing the role where I am today.

I am a hardworking, well presented young person with the ambition to succeed which is why I would like to be working as a Key Account Manager within the next 2 years, supporting and looking after large corporate customers in the field.

My career has progressed considerably over the last few years and this is not only due to my ambition but also to the support and training I have received from FLEETCOR.

I believe that I am a good role model for my colleagues and that my story will inspire others to push for progression and look at ways to develop their skills so that we can succeed together.

Fraser Stradling, Underwriter, The Fuelcard Company, Ipswich

Underwriter – The Fuelcard Company - Ipswich

I joined FLEETCOR in May 2014 as a Customer Service Administrator on a 12 month fixed term contract. Whilst in this role I developed my knowledge of the business, dealt with customer requests and worked towards resolving any issues that customers may have experienced.

I worked as part of a team to achieve overall goals as well as individual goals. I was able to learn new computer systems which have helped develop me to progress into other roles within the business. I also took the opportunity to become chief fire marshal assisting in the safe running of the premises by means of weekly fire alarm tests and checks.

The company were keen to retain the knowledge experience that I had gained as a Customer Service Administrator before my 12 month contract ended, and offered me the opportunity to move to the Risk Team as a Risk Underwriter in October 2014.  In this role I have learnt new processes and skills which I adopted quickly. Also, I was entrusted with additional responsibilities in order to assist the team and external colleagues working alongside us.

Recently I have been able to assist in the training of new team members and as part of my own personal development I have weekly training sessions from senior members of the team to gain an understanding of the more intricate aspects of Underwriting to continue to expand my role.

I have enjoyed working as part of a global company which has invested in my development and I look forward to further progression as an employee of FLEETCOR.

Jane Headon, HR Officer, Corporate, Swindon

HR Officer - Swindon

I started as a temp covering maternity leave as a Secretary to the Director of Fuelcard Sales for Allstar 2010.

I secured a permanent role in the business as Key Accounts & Relationship Executive in 2011. I was in this position for a short period of time as a Secretary to the Sales, Marketing & Operations Directors role become available and as this is something I had done previously and enjoyed I decided to make the move.

In 2012 after the FLEETCOR acquisition I moved in to the role of HR Co-ordinator. This was a new challenge for me as it was something I hadn’t done before and gave me a different view of the business, an administration role working closely with the HR Business Partners & HR Director. 

Having thrived in this role I was given the opportunity to progress to HR Officer in September 2014 where my role developed and I am now more involved in the HR operations as first line support and contact for the business and supporting with daily case management.

I now look forward to developing my HR skills and career with FLEETCOR.

Jim Claridge, Senior Manager,New Products, epyx, Meriden

Senior Manager, New Products - epyx - Meriden

I joined epyx in 2005 after finishing university. I started working within a Network Support role before progressing into more specialist support for our major fleet and leasing customers.

I moved into Product Management, overseeing the ongoing development of the 1link Service Network platform.
My current role is focused on developing new products and initiatives to appeal to both existing and new customers alike.

Since FLEETCOR acquired epyx in 2013, there have been more opportunities for personal development, from training courses through to consultation on how my role within the company will evolve over time. With a lot of investment in bringing new people and their expertise into the business, I’m sure these opportunities will only increase.

It’s an exciting time to be involved with epyx and Fleetcor as we look to expand into new market segments both domestically and internationally.


Ryan Wakeman, Network Development Manager, epyx, Meriden

Network Development Manager - epyx - Meriden

I joined epyx in 2003 as part of the Product Support team, my role was to assist customers that were having difficulty to use our newly launched 1link Service Network. 


In 2005 an opportunity came available in our Business Development team to recruit new garages to join our quickly developing 1link Platform.  I had never sold before and the prospect of getting into sales really excited me. 


With the support of the existing sales team I quickly developed my own sales style and with the extensive knowledge of our platforms that I had picked up whilst supporting our products, I regularly exceeded targets.


In 2013 I was promoted to Telesales Manager, in this time I have worked closely with the team and we have grown and developed into a successful department.


One thing that I have always enjoyed about epyx was that it had a family feel, since the acquisition by FLEETCOR this has not been lost.  You are still part of a company where you are recognised for your hard work and it is not unusual for a telesales executive to get direct personal recognition from a Director.


I am part of a great group here at epyx and I am excited to say that the growth and development is continuing.
